| Every person's reason for starting to smoke is different. My brother started smoking at about age 20 after a head injury--he had never smoked before and now can't live without them. You mentioned weight control and that is more of a reason for girls but also for some guys. Peer pressure is also a factor. I have heard some smokers say they started because it made them think better (and I have seen some science around that that does confirm that there are some benefits for a short time after a cigarette. I have even heard some people say they started because they thought smokers looked cool hanging out together. I have friends who only smoke when drinking in bars and others are smoking. I did a web search for "why", "start", and "smoking" and found a lot of articles--even some on how to start smoking. I have listed one below but there is a lot of information out there. | I did not smoke when I was a teen, but I would be happy to share my experiences. I started smoking as an accompaniment to drinking socially at bars. Several friends around me did, and it seemed like something they got enjoyment out of. Holding a cigarette, playing with it in between your fingers, feels right. In my opinion, cigarettes taste awful. I smoked for 3 years, and even though I enjoyed smoking regularly, cigarettes have always tasted like ash, like fire. However, the deep inhale of smoke, and the subsequent exhale, brings a great sense of calm. It's almost like taking a deep breath and exhaling the troubles on your mind. Once I got over hating the way it tasted, it became a ritual, a habit like any other, that brings comfort. Smoking brought back sensations of the fun I had while doing it...hanging with friends, taking a break from work, driving alone in my car with the music blasting. While you are becoming psychologically addicted to the act, the ritual, your body becomes addicted to the constant nicotine. That combo makes it so hard to stop. I hope that helps your story! |

| the honest answer is not to start in the first place. but the brutal truth is your lungs will turn pitch black, you could die of lung cancer, emphysema, bronchitis, etc. and if you don't die of any of those illnesses/diseases then you will get symptoms of them everyday for the rest of your life, which won't be very long because smoking will kill you. |

| from personal experience and trial and error with lots of old wives tales, if you dont smoke regularly and this night of pot smoking came more or less out of the blue then you really have nothing to worry about, excessive smoking is what effects your system. if you are worried simply drink lots and lots of water but like i said if this isnt something you do regularly you have nothing to worry about it more than likely wont even be in your system at all....im sure youll be fine, good luck! =) |
