How do you feel about gay/lesbian teachers?

Yes , I do think that gay teachers are discriminated a whole lot. Not only by their colleagues, but also the students. When I was in HS I had a lesbian teacher that non of the students liked and it got so out of hand that the parents got her kicked out of the school. All the girls were to afraid of this teacher for the simple fact that she was gay, and back in the day is was like not the thing to go blab about, specially in schools. I know that times have changed now, but I still feel that gay people constantly get put down, and I find that disturbing. It's just their way of life, why not let them live it how they want, and respect them for It. I mean, they don't mess with us for being straight. I like gay people, they are kool.

I wouldn't even think twice about it! And I hope you would introduce them as your partner or girlfriend! I would expect no public display of affection, but I would expect the same for everyone, regardless of sexual preference. We need to teach tolerance, not ignorance. Usually, you stay at one school for a few years. At some point, your coworkers will wonder about your love life and ask about who you are dating. How do you keep it to yourself? I would try to form closer friendships with people who are supportive.

You are right with time, it becomes sort of obvious especially if someone cracks a joke to try to expose you, for instance if you are still constantly single after 5 years of working there some rude person may say "let's find you a man!" simply to irritate you or force you to come out.

I would say that for you the best options are 1. Form friendships with other teachers who are supportive especially other young teachers. 2. Just don't talk about it.

And NEVER talk about it with students. I know guys sometimes ask what you did on the weekend or if you have special valentine's plans, always tell guys that those questions are "inappropriate" and end the topic, EVERY teacher should say that! There can be really bad consequences if teachers start sharing private lives with students, even if just in passing.
