I am sure the number of hispanic men in prison will overtake the number of black men in prison, but this is not the reason why people highlight black men in prison. Its because the percentage of black men in prison out of all black men in the US is much higher than the percentage of any other race compared to their total population. Its similar to the fact that many people talk about poverty in the black community, when the reality is that there are many more poor white people in America than they are poor black people. However, the percentage of poor white people compared to the total white population of America is far less than the percentage of poor black people when compared to the total black population in America. I hope you understand the distinction. Its not racism. If the founding fathers were right, and we are all indeed created equal, then the outside factors which lead a greater percentage of black men to prison must be examined. |

Yet, a biased justice system is more likely to be more lenient to suburban and rural white offenders (probation, lesser jail sentences) and more harsher towards blacks (throw the book at them) simply because of the perception that blacks are somehow more of an imminent danger to society as a whole, which is statistically and scientifically false. |

| Yes it actually does stem from a class issue in society. Statistically speaking, more black and latino families have lower income and of course cannot afford to live in the best of areas. Most of these types of neighborhoods have undesireable activities like drug dealing and gangs occurring. Alot of guys turn to gangs, drug dealing, and violence as a way out of poverty, but its a vicious circle. The more people that join gangs/sell drugs, the more end up in prison. Because of the large number of men in prison, that means there are many guyren without fathers to reinforce rules, thus young boys look to neighborhood gang members as father figures. Its never ending... |
